After a long wait, a food waste collection service is being trialled with 3000 residents in three areas of the district. From last November, the selected household see a weekly collection of food waste, while the usual landfill bin collection drops to once every three weeks.
The trial is proudly announced with an upload to the council's Youtube channel.
Objective ten of the district's Sustainable Economy Strategy set out to 'facilitate the design, delivery and use of sustainable infrastructure and services.'
The council set a target to, "implement a 1-2-3 collection trial, including food waste, across 3,000 homes and prepare for the new statutory responsibilities that will arise from the government’s Resources and Waste Strategy."
This trial has been a long time coming and still has a major issue that Sussex has no where to process the waste. It is currently being driven to Basingstoke until a WSCC site (Brockhurstwood, near Warnham) is ready.
West Sussex says Biffa’s 310,000 tonnes per year capacity mechanical biological treatment (MBT) facility could be converted to process food waste separately, providing what a council report describes as a “cost effective solution”.
The report says the conversion would take 12 months and have an estimated capital cost of just under £7.3 million.
The proposals for the plant are expected to be recommended for approval by the County Council’s cabinet on 15 March.
